Deformed lithium-ion batteries can build up internal gases and become pressurized. If the battery structure is compromised during device opening, such as through drilling or damage, a very quick chemical reaction may occur, leading to the release of heat, smoke, and flames.

Preventing a cell phone battery from exploding.

While rare, taking precautions can significantly lower the chance of accidents related to explosions. It is important not to disregard any warning signs from the device’s battery, such as the screen or back cover starting to detach or bulge slightly. If this occurs, it is recommended to stop using the device and promptly seek professional help.

It’s crucial to monitor overheating in your mobile device. If it is heating up more than usual, particularly during charging, it is advisable to seek a technical assessment.

Suggestions also include refraining from charging the device immediately after heavy use or sun exposure, allowing it to cool down before plugging it in, and avoiding unnecessary overnight charging.

What leads to this type of explosion?

Most smartphones utilize lithium ion batteries, which can swell due to factors like aging, impacts, defects during production, or prolonged heat exposure.

The battery’s structure becomes compromised, and if there is any drilling or short circuit, it can lead to thermal leakage, resulting in a rapid temperature increase and potential fire or explosion.

Experts advise against using a cell phone with a damaged battery and caution against attempting to replace it without the proper tools and care to prevent accidents.
