Samsung is moving forward with plans to manufacture a curved screen for the iPhone that can last up to 20 years.

Samsung collaborates with Apple by providing crucial components for its smartphones, despite being a competitor. This is evident as the South Korean company has authorized the enlargement of its sixth-generation OLED screen production at the A4 facility in South Korea’s Asan campus, potentially for the upcoming iPhone featuring a curved display.

The initial reports suggest that the 20-year iPhone is expected to feature a flexible OLED panel with curvature on all four sides of the screen, unlike the current models which have curved sides only. This new design would bend all sides of the panel to achieve a nearly bezel-less look.

This technology necessitates a more intricate manufacturing procedure, leading to the requirement for increasing production capacity beforehand. Industry reports indicate that the expansion will boost the A4 plant’s capacity by approximately 15 thousand substrates per month.

There is currently no official name for the new production line, but further information is expected to be determined by August according to the schedule. Following this, equipment requests should be initiated, with plant installation and preparation targeted for completion by 2027.

Nikon will supply 14 lithography equipment and Canon Tokki will provide the deposition system for OLED panel manufacturing, with demand exceeding initial expectations during project planning.

Samsung and Apple have not yet confirmed details about the upcoming iPhone for 2020, but indications suggest that information will be released in the near future.
