Windows 11 is getting a new feature that will enable users to remove the system AI and free up storage space on their PCs.
Microsoft is getting ready to launch a feature that will satisfy those who are fed up with AI on Windows 11. Windows Insider program participants are currently receiving a trial version of the operating system with a unique button for removing local AI elements, freeing up additional space on their computers.
The finding was uncovered in the Windows 11 Insider build 26300.8553, which was released at the end of May. Even though it was not mentioned in the official changelog, users such as techosaruserex and PhantomofEarth came across this hidden feature within the system.
Windows 11 is starting to distinguish AI from standard functions.
Since the release of version 24H2, Windows 11 has been operating on two different paths. One path is the traditional Windows used on the majority of PCs, while the other is for Copilot+ PCs designed to utilize AI capabilities directly on the device.
Copilot+ PCs have specific requirements, including a minimum 40 TOPS NPU, 16 GB of RAM, and 256 GB of storage, while regular Windows 11 has lower requirements like 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of space.
All these functions, such as creating images, summarizing text, rewriting, analyzing images, and intelligent editing, require models to be installed on the computer. These files take up space, so they are only useful for those who use or plan to use these features.
Phi Silica is consuming over 2.5 gigabytes of space.
One illustration featured on the new page is Phi Silica, a condensed Microsoft language model designed to operate locally on the NPU of suitable PCs. It is typically activated when users seek text summarization, rephrasing, and content creation.
PhantomofEarth released a screenshot showing a component using over 2.5 GB of storage, with a new “Uninstall” button located below to remove it after a system restart.
MS is making it simpler to uninstall AI components/models in Windows 11. The latest Experimental Ge build (26300.8553) has some hidden updates to AI components settings, with new subpages for models that include an uninstall button.

Microsoft is simplifying the process of removing AI components/models in Windows 11. The most recent Experimental Ge build (26300.8553) has added new subpages for models with an uninstall option.
Microsoft is testing a method to delete the local AI files stored on the PC without the need for PowerShell, Windows Registry, or external “debloat” tools.
Many users have turned to using scripts to eliminate unwanted elements from Windows 11 in recent years, which can cause system issues, instability, or breakage after updates.
The process becomes more secure with an official setting available in the system. Simply delete and restart to finish the deletion process.
Availability is the state of being able to be used or accessed.
The latest feature was discovered in Windows 11 Insider build 26300.8553, but Microsoft has not officially announced it yet, so there is no confirmed release date for all users.
If the feature progresses in the tests, it will be rolled out to Windows Insider program members before being included in future updates for Windows 11.
